Former GFRIEND Members Start Anew with VIVIZ

Just nine months after KPOP girl group GFRIEND disbanded, former members Eunha, SinB, and Umji were off to a new start with VIVIZ, pronounced as Bibiji. It is a new girl group under the entertainment agency BPM or Big Planet Made. The group name came from the two words “VIVID dayZ” with the concepts “clear, intense, and days,” which means “the meaning of becoming artists who always proudly express their own colors to the world.” The trio debuted for the second time on February 9, 2022 with their first extended play called Beam of Prism.

What happened to GFRIEND?

The disbandment of GFRIEND could come down as the most unexpected disbandments in KPOP history. In an episode of ‘SCAN VIVIZ’, a show under the Youtube channel IDOLLIVE, former GFRIEND member SinB revealed they knew about their disbandment a month before it was publicly announced. She also said that it was a difficult time for all the members as they didn’t know how to tell their fans that they won’t be GFRIEND anymore. But seeing how things happened, it doesn’t seem that it was just a simple decision of disbandment.

After the announcement of GFRIEND’s disbandment in May 2021, fans were all shocked as the members previously told them that they would renew their contracts in Source Music. No prior hints were made before. In fact, GFRIEND’s future schedules were already organized. Even the girls’ staff members were surprised as how things escalated quickly like they were not informed of the disbandment.

Months after, if you would ask what really happened, fans can only give assumptions. There was no real reason given as to why GFRIEND members were separated unexpectedly. But the most given speculation was there was some contract disagreements with the members or with their agency. Nevertheless, their handwritten letters to fans indicate that they only decided to move forward with their individual careers.

Moving Forward with VIVIZ

After being together for six years, GFRIEND members were reportedly signing to other entertainment agencies after the disbandment. Leader Sowon signed with IOK company as an actress and changed her stage name to her birth name, Kim So Jung. Yerin signed with Sublime Artist Agency to continue her singing career. Lead singer Yuju has been continuing as a solo singer. And the last three, Eunha, Umji, and SinB are now in VIVIZ.

It seems like a positive start with all the members, especially the VIVIZ trio who promoted their single “Bop! Bop!” on music shows. In an interview with the media, they revealed their resolutions for starting over as an idol group again. They all seemed nervous to face the fans in a new girl group, but they worked twice as hard for this comeback as gratitude to the fans who waited for them.

Somehow, what happened to the GFRIEND members may be an inspiration for other idols to not give up and continue to do what they love. Watching VIVIZ, you will see how they are excited to create new memories in their careers with their fans. Re-debuting may not be a taboo in the KPOP scene, after all.
